After a serious traffic accident, nothing is ever the same again. In this situation, competent contact persons from the North Rhine-Westphalia police are there to help you. They will take time for you, listen to you and offer you fast and unbureaucratic help.
The way the police deal with victims of serious and very serious road accidents and their relatives is based on three principles:
- Taking into account the exceptional situation in which those involved in and affected by serious and very serious traffic accidents may find themselves
- Providing situation-appropriate services from specialist advice centers and victim support facilities
- Informing victims about their rights and the course of proceedings with the police, prosecution and court
Victim protection is a matter of course for the North Rhine-Westphalia police
Victim protection and victim support for those affected by serious traffic accidents or their relatives are an integral part of police work in North Rhine-Westphalia. For this reason, a "Traffic Victim Protection" unit has been set up in every district police authority. A contact person can also be found at your local police station.
The specially trained contact persons of the North Rhine-Westphalia Police Traffic Victim Protection Service guarantee those affected by serious traffic accidents or their relatives fast, competent and unbureaucratic "initial support". They will be happy to provide you with information on police details relating to the traffic accident and advise you in confidence on topics such as legal assistance, insurance matters, psychological contact points and much more.

For example, you can ask the contact persons at the Traffic Victim Protection Office about the following:
- Details of the traffic accident and the status of the investigation
- File number of the accident report
- Where were the injured or killed persons taken
- Status of those involved in the accident: Who caused the accident? Who is listed as the injured party? Who is accused of causing the traffic accident? Who else is involved?
- Has an expert opinion already been commissioned?
- If vehicles have been seized: Where are they now? Where are personal belongings located?
